Camera Gear For About The Town Trips

There is always a camera, lens, strap and bag for the journey.

As a photographer my biggest dilemma before going just about anywhere is packing the right gear. From a short trip to the grocery store to a Disney adventure there is always a camera, a lens, a strap, a bag and accessories for the journey.

Would it surprise anyone if I said that when I'm not all geared-up for a specific photo-venture that I am normally just like everyone else and have my iPhone XS on hand; probably not. Although my iPhone XS does take decent pictures, I try to remember to pocket my Ricoh GR II.

The reason I usually try to pocket my Ricoh GR II is because it is a super slim, compact APS-C camera that packs about 16MPs with a handful of useful shooting options from snap-focus and manual mode to easy in-camera USB charging while on the go to the effortless ergonomic controls. These features make the GR II  perfect for scouting locations and capturing some interesting life on the street. It's probably not the best choice for shooting waterfalls and sprawling landscapes, but the GR II’s APS-C sensor will capture images with a better dynamic range and in RAW which my iPhone XS doesn’t do very well out-of-the-box.

For the outings where I may potentially want to shoot something with more detail, distance or creativity, I sometimes take my Nikon Z5 (read my thoughts on the Z5 here) with Tamron's 85mm Prime and 70-200mm using Peak Design's Clutch hand strap or Slide. I pack all of this easily and comfortably inside my Peak Design Everyday Sling 10L for the outing, and as a bonus, it holds my wallet and keys safely too.

Wait, about a tripod? I have Peak Design's Arca-compatible camera base on both my GR II and Z5. However, "About the town" photography usually doesn't lend itself to tripod use. Then again, I am of the mindset always keep one in the car just in case. And, that is typically my Promaster XC525.

Point, shoot, explore and have fun!

Quick disclaimer: All of the Peak Design product I have personally purchased. None was given or loaned to me. I just really enjoy using their products. It's amazing stuff worth every dollar.
